The Most Effective Method To Dismantle a Bunk Bed For Moving
Bunk beds are heavy and difficult to move, so preparing to disassemble the bunk properly before moving in is essential. We recommend disassembling your bunk before the moving truck arrives. This will prevent you from struggling to dismantle your bunk after trying unsuccessfully to turn it in all directions to pass it through the door frame.
Bunk beds can be one of the most time-consuming pieces of furniture to take apart on move-in day. The more you prepare simple things like bunk beds, the more likely you are to feel ready for moving day. So, here we offer an easy guide from
moving and storage experts on how to dismantle a bunk bed.
For the necessary tools and ten simple steps that break down how to disassemble a bunk bed in detail with pictures to guide you through the entire process, read on!
Before you start:
Prepare enough space to work
This is essential, as you don’t want it to come apart and find yourself cornered with pieces of the frame falling on you. Take the time to clear the room the bunk is in as much as possible and then move the bed to the center of the room.
Make sure you have someone working with you
You should never build or dismantle anything with heavy parts without having at least someone in the room with you, but ideally they will help you. Dismantling furniture can be dangerous if something falls, especially if you are not wearing the proper protective gear, such as steel-toed boots.
Wear protective clothing
Wear protective clothing. Accidents happen! To reduce the risk of injury, wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.
How to disassemble a bunk bed:
Prepare your tools
Cordless drill
Bit Allen (hexagonal)
Allen keys (hexagonal)
screwdriver
Phillips screwdriver
Remove the mattresses from the frame and set them aside.
Now is as good a time as any to wrap your mattress in plastic. This will prevent dirt and dust from getting on your mattresses and doing it before you take the bunk apart reduces the chance that you will forget to do it later. To create space in the room for deconstruction, we recommend that you place the mattresses in another room, especially if you are working in a confined space.
Remove the screws from the side of the bed ladder with your screwdriver
As with all hardware, we suggest that you put the screws in a plastic bag and keep it in the same place in the room, such as a window sill, while removing the bunk bed. It is also a good idea to keep all tools in the same place to avoid accidents and to ensure your safety and that of whoever helps you disassemble the bunk.
Remove the ladder from the bunk and place it safely aside
Why not wrap on the go? Have a blanket handy to wrap the ladder before setting it aside. The best place is with the mattresses, safely set aside and ready to be transported to the
moving truck.
Be careful with the bracket screws
The support screws can fall out of the bed when or after removing the main screws. Make sure you’re paying attention to these and keep putting screws in your plastic bag to keep them secure as you go.
Remove the ladder side of the bed and make sure all screws have been removed
When disassembling the bunk, it is important to be careful not to risk losing parts or leaving hazards on the ground. You’ll also save yourself some trouble by making sure all the screws have been removed on this side of the bed before attempting to remove this side of the frame.
We recommend always working with more than one body when deconstructing or moving any piece of furniture. It is especially important in this case, as with two people you can hold the still intact side of either end of the bed while removing this side of the bunk frame.
Once the sides are removed, continue to disassemble the safety rails
The safety rail is attached to the outer side rail of the upper bunk using screws. Unscrew these and remove the safety rail, setting aside with other pieces. Again, keep all the bolts together and make sure there are two people working to keep the rest of the joined parts of the bunk supported.
Spread the other side of the bed as above.
Taking apart a bunk is a matter of careful handling and teamwork. You’ll want to coordinate with the other person handling the task before flipping over the bunk frame to tackle the other side.
Secure all parts of the bed, including screws
It is a good idea to wrap each section of the deck individually to avoid scratches or damage to the
moving truck. You can use strong tape to adhere the plastic bag with screws to one part of the bed or create a box with all the hardware of all the furniture so that everything is in the same place. Either way, it’s essential that you label the plastic bag so you know where the screws belong.
Tips to make your disassembled bunk easy to reassemble on the other side:
Store all bolts and screws in a plastic bag and label it so it won’t get lost in a pile of miscellaneous nuts and bolts from your relocation.
Wrap the bed frames in mobile protective blankets before loading them into the truck to avoid scratches and scrapes.
Wrap your mattresses in plastic to keep dust out.
